In order to protect and expand access to sexual and reproductive health care, it is vital to support elected officials who will stand with Planned Parenthood at the State House, on local city councils, and in other policymaking positions across Massachusetts. PPAF endorses candidates who have a strong and consistent record of support for women’s health and will continue to be a tireless advocate once they take office or are re-elected.

This past fall, PPAF endorsed Ayanna Pressley and Felix Arroyo for Boston’s City Councilors At-Large due to their record of strong support for policies that protect and expand access to sexual and reproductive health services for the residents of Boston. This was the first time in its history that PPAF endorsed a race in a municipal election. While municipal leaders do not typically have jurisdiction over the legislative matters that PPAF monitors and mobilizes around, PPAF’s endorsement is an acknowledgement that local leaders can play a role in protecting and expanding access to sexual and reproductive health services in their communities. Councilors Pressley and Arroyo took in the first and second most votes, respectively, and will now continue to serve the residents of Boston as strong leaders on women’s health.

PPAF has helped maintain the pro-choice majority in the Massachusetts legislature by endorsing in past elections as well supporting candidates for state-wide office. In 2010, women’s health advocates such as Governor Deval Patrick, Lt. Governor Tim Murray, and Attorney General Martha Coakley held their seats, and 34 of the 46 candidates we endorsed for the House or Senate won their races. Read a complete list of our endorsements in the 2010 election.

Leading up to the 2012 election, PPAF will work to educate voters about candidates’ positions on women’s health and endorse candidates who support health care access, abortion rights, and comprehensive sex education, and whose record and goals are consistent with our mission.

Stay tuned for updates as we make endorsements in the 2012 election and continue working to ensure that your elected officials will stand up for women’s health.
